New FTA Between EFTA and Moldova Coming Into Effect

Starting April 1, 2025, the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and Moldova will come into effect, marking a significant milestone in bilateral trade. This agreement involves the member states of EFTA – Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland – and will unlock new opportunities for businesses across the region. 

What Does This Mean for Businesses? 

• Duty-Free Access: 98.5% of Swiss exports to Moldova will be tariff-free, boosting market access and making Swiss products more competitive. The same benefit applies to all EFTA members, strengthening their position in the Moldovan market. 

• Broad Scope: The FTA goes beyond goods, covering investment, intellectual property protection, non-tariff barrier reductions, competition, trade facilitation, and sustainable development. 

• Digital Trade Expansion: This agreement also introduces comprehensive rules on e-commerce, based on the new EFTA model chapter, which will open up further potential for digital trade between the EFTA countries and Moldova. 

Political and Economic Impact 

The FTA not only advances economic relations but also supports Moldova’s integration into European and global economic structures, especially in light of geopolitical challenges like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. By strengthening Moldova’s trade ties with EFTA members, this agreement contributes to regional stability and economic development. 

Current Trade Stats 

In 2023, Switzerland alone exported goods worth 56 million CHF (excluding gold) to Moldova, while importing goods valued at 22 million CHF. With the new FTA, the entire EFTA bloc is positioned to increase its trade and expand market reach in Moldova.
